Sekedar berbagi cerita.
Waktu itu ada komputer P-IV/2.4GHz milik sekolah yg mau diinstal
slackware 12. Instalasi dan booting slackware berjalan lancar.
Masalah muncul saat pendeteksian lancard terutama untuk lancard
ke-3, eth0 dan eth1 detek namun yg ke-3 agak kedetek.
Padahal ini jenis lancard yg disupport linux.
Jika diamati di dmesg terlihat semua lancard kedetek:

Dari pesan dmesg tidak bisa dipungkiri device eth0, eth1, eth2
sudah dikenal. OK, saya edit file /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf untuk
memasukkan info network dev eth0, eth1, dan eth2. Kemudian jalankan
rc.inet1 atau restart networking. Saat jalankan ifconfig anehnya
hanya menampilkan device eth0, eth1 dan lo, lantas kemana eth2 ?
Saya coba ifconfig eth2 secara manual, hasilnya error. Padahal jelas
modulenya ada. Reboot juga tidak membantu.
Setelah bolak balik ganti lancard dan tetap tidak berhasil untuk
menampilkan eth2, akhirnya baca2 script yg mengaktifkan network
slack di /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1. Dari situ terlihat pembacaan device
dilakukan melalui grepping device di /proc/net/dev. Akhirnya saya
cat isi file tsb:

(Yang ditampilkan di atas hanya ilustrasi untuk server yg sdh running well).
Ternyata device lan card ke-3 "lukir" atau pindah nomor ke eth4 dr
semula eth2 (dmesg). Dengan menggantikan eth2 menjadi eth4 di rc.inet1.conf
akhirnya semua lancard bisa diaktifkan network-nya.
Sampai saat ini saya masih belum tahu penyebabnya mengapa bisa terjadi
demikian, baru kali ini mengalami kejadian yg saya rasa agak weird.
Saya tidak tahu apabila memakai GUI (xwindows) instalasi lancard akan
lebih mudah. Any sharing ideas or stories ?
