If you try to deploy two applications with the same
name in a single war, shouldn't the tapestry framework
detect this and report it somehow (e.g. in the form
of an Exception)?

There isn't a problem having multiple applications in
the same WAR. In fact, this is how the Tapestry
Tutorial is packaged.
You just have to make sure each application has a unique
name (defined in the application specification).
