[Tapestry-developer] Is War file necessary?

Forgive me for asking such a simple question, but is it necessary to put html, class, jwc, application, and xml files in a war file before running them in jetty?   Or can you just compile your classes, set up the other files and run them that way?   Tia   Michael Doherty
