I don't think this the case. 

It appears that your Portlet example is exhibiting the
same problem.

I had initially been running Tomcat 4.0.3, then tested
on your preferred platform JBoss/Jetty.

This could be linked to the Jetty - Shell problem
mentioned in another thread.
