It's always hard to debug something on a platform that isn't handy. Sorry
for the trouble... Think of it as building character... ;-)

Okay. One thing I noticed it that "regular" Eclipse tool tips seem to be
produced by a different mechanism than the ones used in parts of Spindle
(all of Spindle?). The Spindle tool tips seem to be created using a top
level window of some sort. In other words, the window manager puts an icon
in the Gnome panel (think Windows Start bar at the bottom of the screen)
each time a tooltip pops up. It doesn't do that for "regular" Eclipse tool
tips. I'm assuming this is by design, possibly to work around a particular
Eclipse/SWT thing of which I'm totally ignorant. In any case, "regular"
Eclipse tool tips (in things like the standard Java editor) work just fine.
The technique used by Spindle seems to be throwing things off. A quick
workaround for Linux users (at least GTK ones) until you get this fully
debugged might be to offer a config option in the Preferences dialog that
simply disables the tool tips. I actually don't fine them too useful (even
many of the standard Eclipse Java ones), and I'd rather use Spindle without
crashes than have the tool tips, in any case.

I'm stalled here, too. I tried it, but Motif Eclipse won't even start on
RH8, at least my install. The Eclipse site says that both the GTK and Motif
versions are for RH 7.X, so maybe there is something substantially different
with RH8, or I haven't installed a particular library that it requires. I
get the JVM blowing up while searching for a particular font. I'm sure this
is a Eclipse/SWT/RH8 thing, totally unrelated to Spindle (haven't even tried
installing it on the Motif version yet).
