Well, there might be a reason why Apple is looking at Intel CPUs. :-) (Especially when you are integer-bound.)
Also, it's hard to compare a laptop to a desktop since the I/O system is almost always substantially worse on a laptop. Java on OS X feels about 2x as slow to me as on Windows (that is a totally made up value -- it's just my perception -- I don't care enough to time/benchmark it). For what I do, though, it's still fast enough for Java development. Non-Java is plenty fast enough. I rarely use Ant to build things (just save the file in Eclipse and let it build the one file in a second). The last time I did a full build of Cayenne on OS X using Ant it took under 2 minutes, but I usually just build one file at a time in Eclipse. Basically, if you like OS X as a whole (and I far prefer OS X to Linux/Windows for a number of reasons), you can do reasonable Java development on it, but Java isn't Apple's #1 priority. (It's not mine, either.) One day, I'll figure out how to use Jetty with Eclipse and Tapestry on OS X. Jetty starts up substantially faster than Tomcat on OS X (and I suspect other platforms). /dev/mrg PS. Oh, and don't buy RAM from Apple. PPS. I don't use the trash can on my screen. :-) -----Original Message----- From: Sergei Dubov [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 22, 2005 2:00 PM To: Tapestry users Subject: Re: off topic which dev. laptop Frank, I have to concur with Konstantin. I have an 1.8 Ghz iMac G5 (!) 2Gb of RAM. Apple hardware is nothing, absolutely nothing compared to the latest AMD64 offerings. (The fact that you want a G4 laptop makes things even worse). You're basically way overpaying for a trendy aluminum box with a pretty looking trash can on the screen. I recently bought an Acer Ferrari 4000 laptop with 2Ghz AMD Turion. I've never ever worked on anything as fast as this box. Here is a comparison. Clean->Compile->Deploy Ant task on my G5 iMac takes about 35-40 seconds for my (Tapestry-Spring-Hibernate) application (it is relatively large). On my ferrari laptop, it is 12 seconds. I just find Apple to be slow (comparatively speaking). Everything is just slow, from UI to Java performance. Last piece of advise, if you still decide to buy Apple. Buy it off Ebay, there are some sweat second-hand deals there. Just don't pay Apple 50% profit margin.
