I'm also interested building a component to help create image galleries. I'm fairly new to Tapestry, but I'm interested in trying it. I plan to use it to create galleries of family photos.
Some ideas: Possibly make the component work like an iterator to avoid locking the user into a specific layout. Have a model (Interface) that exposes the full size image, a thumbnail, tooltip text, and a description for each image. I like the idea of categories although I wonder if that should be included in the component or if the user of the component should be filtering the image list as part of putting images in the gallery. I think categories would be more app specific. I could see a default model that could take the location of the full size image and generate thumbnails on the fly.
