I've got tap4+hibernate+hivetranse working.  Do you have the 
TransactionDefaults element?  Here's mine:

  <!-- Default transaction management settings -->
  <contribution configuration-id="hivetranse.core.TransactionDefaults">
    <defaults>
      <exception        name="java.lang.Throwable" rollback="true"/>
      <method           pattern="*" demarcation="Required"/>
    </defaults>
  </contribution>
