Given TCP's asynchronous, full-duplex nature, how can the server know when the message contents were sent?
It doesn't, per se. It just clears the input buffer after the actual "DATA" command itself and the reply it transmits, and then prepares to accept the actual contents of the message once it has transmitted the positive response to the "DATA" command.
