It could well be an something that was fostered or developed, conciously or unconciously, through prayer, and given the mystical themes of some of Mr. Statman's albums and the emotion his playing gives voice to in his klezmer albums, music and prayer seem to exist in the same sphere for him. What i do heavily appreciate is that he can extend that same intention or expression to fiddle tunes and bluegrass.
Certainly i do think that he can pick some fine fast and clever passages, but, if it was just that i'd not have the same fascination with his music... for me its that the technical side of the playing seems to be a secondary concern, more important seems to be effort to draw upon the emotion of the material, thats what gives it wings for me.
