The problem with connecting to check the plugin files should not have 
stopped Taverna actually working. It just took a long time to start up :(

I tried setting environment variables and JVM options to set the default 
timeout. However, that appeared to have no effect.

Yes! I've put in two bug reports for this: one for the plugin and one 
for the helpset. Setting timeouts in the code did work (in the codebase 
I'm working on), so it will make it into the next release.
