I cannot reproduce this. I use IMAP on a Courier server and gmail. Both seem to work OK in this respect.
For a while now I have had a feeling that IMAP isn't working as well as it used to before they fixed the IMAP priority handling. It seems to fall over more often. I can't really be more specific than that really as I haven't been analyzing the logs.
