After further investigation, it turns out to be NOD32 that is blocking
the download of specific emails (I don't know why - recent
notifications from Twitter were being blocked, for example, although
older messages could be downloaded fine). In NOD, going to Advanced
Setup | Web and Emai | Email Client Protection | IMAP, IMAPS and
clearing the IMAP checkbox solves the problem.

The messages downloaded fine with Thunderbird, but that might have
been because it was using a TLS connection, which NOD does not scan,
whilst TB was using a Regular connection.

If  anyone  wants  a  copy  of the offending messages I am happy to PM
them. I might raise the issue with NOD too.
