You can, but it's not a problem:
In threaded view the messages become marked as read when the messages
*below* it are also marked read (regardless of the threading method).
This can be a bit irritating if you have an old thread with all
messages already marked read and then you get a new message to the
bottom of the thread, because the thread as a whole becomes marked
unread (actually only the messages in a direct connection to the new
one).
