Hello List,

I do know (as I stated it myself) 1.60g ain't a Beta version, but I'll
first drop the note here, especially as I hope somebody at RITLabs is
reading this list and recognizes it faster than on TBUDL due to the
lower traffic here at the moment.

One statement: RTV in 1.60g sucks.

I'm running a Duron 750 with 512 MBytes RAM.
Just in this moment TB! stopped displaying messages both in the
preview pane as well as when using folder view.
Switching to PTV makes the messages be shown, changing back to RTV is
NO solution. I assume restarting TB! will help, this will be tested
after writing this message.

The current memory consumption for The Bat! is round about 50 MByte,
it is _on top_ of the list in my task manager when sorting by memory
usage. 1296 GDI objects in use, VM size 64 MByte. 188 Handles, 8
Threads and 370 User Objects.
Just in case somebody of the developers has a use for this
informations.

I've just managed it with minimizing The Bat! and restoring it's
windows to make the very next message be shown again in RTV, but now
it permanently fails. I can change the folders, I do still see which
messages are unread, seems every other function is working, including
compression of folders and creating a new mail (as you can read).

It would be _VERY_ nice if somebody in Moldavia has an hint how to pin
down this ugly bug.

I tried killing all other applications running in my tray (Babylon,
Clip Cache, United Devices, PGP-Tray) but even this only helped a few
seconds and, to be precise, two mails, so I'd assume it was a
coincidence.

So a very clear question of mine is: can we do anything, and if WHAT
can we do, to pin down the culprit of this effect? As this happens the
first time to me I don't know how often this will be reproduced on my
machine, but as everybody must have noticed it is not a problem of
'one person, with only the wrong system setup' ...

My suggestion is it is time for a switch

'Yes, I have a problem with RTV not showing my mails. Please create a
debug trace file from now on until I shut down The Bat! that exactly
logs what actions RTV is taking and what the results / return codes of
several used functions are.'

that can be activated in general options at runtime, so the resulting
log file can be sent in for further inspection, or even only the
relevant parts if if is clear text and user can copy the obviously
failing calls from it.

I do know everybody is looking forward to v2 and 1.60 should be the
latest 1.x release and no heavy bugfixing should be done, BUT: who
guaranties this bug is not present in v2 too, using the same
component? How can people continue using 1.60 if it simply fails
showing the messages? This ain't a property of a _stable_ version and
have to be pinned down and solved.

So please ... can finally somebody at RITLabs take the time to drop a
note if and how this will be handled? I do know everybody is busy, but
time for a short note with a few statement should be taken ... Most of
us, if not all on this list, are taking time to beta test version and
we're doing it (mostly) seriously. We're interested in stable versions
and therefore help as we can. But without any feedback it is really
hard to do so.
And last but not least I'm not talking about a bug one can avoid by
'simply not pressing this button', but a show stopper ...

So ... how should we handle this? Forget about the RTV?

Pit

P.S.: As assumed restarting The Bat! 'solved' the problem, but to be
honest: this _ain't_ a solution, especially as I've read of people
only being able to read _exactly one_ mail with RTV and therefore
being forced to restart every _two_ messages.
