I use FastMail with an enhanced account as my main IMAP provider. All my domain and list traffic goes through it and I can't say I've ever experienced any bandwidth spikes - but there again I don't use TB! overmuch these days. But, you might be right and if TB! is over-monitoring the mailboxes it could explain the slowness.
I'll try some tests with Port Explorer and Mulberry/TheBat/Thunderbird this evening and see if I can see a pattern with them.
