It was not my 'invention', I think it was Vili who suggested it a long
time ago, but I have solved this issue by creating a password protected
account that I call 'Archive'. As you may know, password protected
accounts are not loaded and opened (and therefore don't take any
resources) until you manually open them.

What I have done is somewhat replicate the folder structure (just
folders I wan to archive) of my 3 main accounts in Archive account.
Then, in the folder Properties of those folders I want to archive, in
the Deletion tab I set up 'Alternative deletion' to move messages to
corresponding folder in Archives and to use alternative deletion when
purging. This way, for example, I keep only the last 3 months worth of
messages in my TBBeta folder plus almost 3 years worth in the
corresponding TBBeta folder in Archives account.

If I want to search all messages, all I have to do is open the Archives
account and enter password prior to running the search.

This solution works great for me.
