Because there has been a lot of requests for it. Requests from many
who do use the other very useful features of TB! that aren't available
in other clients.
The plain text viewer is still available for those uninterested in the
RTFV.

Apparently implementing this sort of thing in the plain text viewer is
very difficult, hence the move to another viewer.

At the moment, yes.
I do appreciate the slowness at this time. It's still in beta so we
don't know what it will be like when fully optimised. I already see
that it's faster in beta 9.
