I am using STARTTLS and port 587. 

"Perform SMTP Authentication" and "Same user/password as for mail 
retrieval" are my authentication settings. 

I don't have a box for "SMTP Servers On-The-Go".


Have you tried logging into Gmail web interface and answering a 
CAPTCHA? I can't remember whether it was a Gmail or a Yahoo account 
that went down a few months back, and that was all I ended up needing 
to do to get it working.

If you have "2-step verification" enabled on your Gmail account, you 
may possibly need "application-specific passwords"
