1) Is this in the FAQ?  It should be.

2) Don't reply to a message when starting a new thread.  This makes
   your new topic get buried in a (potentially old and ignored)
   thread.  Always do "New Message" when starting a new topic.

3) If the date that would be shown is the current date, it is not
   shown.  There is no configuration option for this, it's just the
   way it is.
