I personally don't use age limits.

For me it has always continued scrolling cycling through the messages
repeatedly until all have been read or the age limit is passed.

Again, I have never seen this and may be secondary to the age limit
setting that you use.

I would have thought that the age was the amount of time since the
message was received/downloaded.
