There is Shift+F2.

I usually use the "Save draft" for this - which is a clumsy
workaround. It has the advantage of not signing (PGP) the message
though.

This feature together with a better PGP support (no, I am not using
the version stated in the signature but a ckt implementation; and I
have used hexediting which worked for me till TB! 1.42 I think, after
that it did not work anymore) is on top of my wish list.
