Actually yes. There is a difference in the way DOS-based (i.e. Win9x)
and Mac recognize associations. Under DOS and Win it is the extension
(*.doc), under Mac there is a second file ("Ressource fork") which
tells the OS what it is.

So the thing to do is, ask what kind of programme created the file,
then find out the DOS-extension for it (i.e. DOC, TXT, CDR) and rename
the file. Another easy way to associate it to the right programme
would be to use Win's "Associate programme".

BTW, this sounds very dangerous. Whoever send you the file should have
warned you beforehand. Be aware, that some (very badly written)
malicious programme could be hidden under this attachment.
