It sounds like an application interaction.
I've had problems with the ticker disappearing while running virtual
desktop software. Otherwise, I've had no problems across versions.
Others had experience where the ticker disappeared and this was usually
after a resolution change after changing monitors, moving their TB!
installation to another machine, registry settings and all.
If you're problem is transient/sporadic, I'd look at an application
interaction as the culprit.
