There's nothing mysterious about Virtual Access (VA)! It's probably
more well known amongst CIX (a british conferencing service) or
Compuserve users. It has existed in various guises (Wigwam, Teepee,
PowWow and VA) for over ten years. Aside from being an excellent OLR
for CIX and CIS it is also a very capable mail and news client. It can
handle an essentially unlimited number of mail accounts and
newsservers. It's main strengths are excellent threading and very
robust handling of a large messagebase. My VA messagebase is, for
example, about 2 GB and the programme is as fast and stable as it was
the day I installed it about seven years ago. I have heard of others
with messagebases of over 8 GB. Sadly, VA has not been actively
developed for over two years now and does not support stuff like
outgoing HTML mail, Unicode, yEnc encoding etc. but otherwise it is
fully functional for good old-fashioned mail and news. Hence the
influx of bemused VA users recently infesting this forum. There are
rumours that at least parts of VA may be made open sorce at some point
but, as yet, it is not certain if or when that will happen. You can take a look
here at http://www.atlantic-coast.com/va/ if you're interested.
