Must have been very old times :-)

Even RFC-821, and of course it's 'going to be replacement' RFC-2821, state
a SMTP has to prepend a period if a line starts with one when sending out
the message and has to strip the dot if it receives a line starting with
one (Section 4.5.2) :-)

And RFC-821 is from August 1982 :-)
