My sympathy goes your way, though I personally never feel the urge to
close a thread while reading mail. I have a sneaky feeling that this
is also the case with the developers, and this is why your desired
shortcut hasn't yet been implemented. Not to say that they don't
implement features that don't interest them specifically. :-) They
certainly do.
