I checked Windows Explorer, and the problem subfolders (common) were not listed. I tried renaming as suggested above, etc., but to no avail. I then tried just deleting all of the messages in one corrupted subfolder (which deleted them in all of the other corrupted subfolders), and then created new common folders and transferred messages from Trash to the new folders. I was able to transfer the messages okay. I then created a new common folder and nested the others under it successfully. The new folder tree shows up in Explorer, so it looks like at least for now the problem has ben overcome without more drastic measures. BTW - I apologize for posting from a web-based system, but I'm overseas and unable to post from the address in the US from which I'm subscribed. (And I don't want to change my subscription to my ISP here because it charges by both the hour and kb.) Thanks for all the advice.
