I checked Windows Explorer, and the problem subfolders (common) were
not listed.  I tried renaming as suggested above, etc., but to no
avail. I then tried just deleting all of the messages in one corrupted
subfolder (which deleted them in all of the other corrupted
subfolders), and then created new common folders and transferred
messages from Trash to the new folders. I was able to transfer the
messages okay.  I then created a new common folder and nested the
others under it successfully. The new folder tree shows up in
Explorer, so it looks like at least for now the problem has ben
overcome without more drastic measures.

BTW - I apologize for posting from a web-based system, but I'm
overseas and unable to post from the address in the US from which I'm
subscribed.  (And I don't want to change my subscription to my ISP
here  because it charges by both the hour and kb.)
