I'm familiar with the messages you're describing. I don't think it is
a filter problem. The problem is that what appears to be plain text is
actually text interspersed with numerous (usually bogus) html tags. So
you're filtering on "banned" which is what is visible, but what's
actually in the source is "b<some html tag>ann<another html tag>ed".

The filter doesn't ignore the html tags. And since the tags are
randomly placed and can be made up of anything, it's near to
impossible to write a filter specifically for it. Take a look at the
source of the message (F9) and see if these tags are interspersed
throughout the message.

Your best bet to filter this type of spam is to use the spam
plug-in(s) or Popfile or something similar - a Bayesian filter that
"learns" as spammers come up with new tricks.
