I have a feeling that you may be typing the "text" in the "Link name"
dialog, which is the "name" part of the tag, not the visible text.

Try this:

Type the text you want to see.

Select it.

Choose the link icon.

Type the URL in the URL part of the dialog.

Note that the text you have selected is shown above and it not
editable.

If you want to give the link a name, type it in the name box.

This technique generates a proper HTML link for me.
