Advantage: you're always sure you have the right version of the attachment that you actually sent or received (instead of a link/reference to the file you stored elsewhere on your hard drive, which you may have edited subsequently).

Disadvantage: your mailboxes are bigger, since you're storing the attachment along with the rest.
