Think more along the lines of a group mail server. That is, The Bat!
acts as a central repository for the e-mail within an organization,
but Internal mail is housed elsewhere.

Intra-organization can go directly through The Bat! to the other
users. However, Internet mail still relies on a third part, like the
ISP.
