The smileys are not embedded in the message, if thats what you mean.

Its TB's own implementation. The smileys are kept locally with each
installation and only an identifier is sent in the message, in the style
of :smileyhandle: - TB runs its own "interpreter" over the message and
shows the local image (if its there!) instead of the handle.

While it does that, it still does'n show *bold* _underline_ or /italics/
which is a pity if you ask me...
