I had similar results here (the long shutdown time) and came across an item
in one of the help files that suggested NOT doing "compress on exit" for
large folders. I have a couple of folders with more than 20,000 messages in
each (including subfolders) and removed the checkmark for them. The long
shutdown time vanished. I still keep things tidy, but now I do so by using
the Folder Maintenance tool once a week or so to do all of the purging and
compression...
