You could always use the tabs at the bottom of the message list. For
the "all" tab, maybe remove the tick from "expand all threads" and for
the "unread" tab, leave it there. (Probably not what you want because
it then only shows the unread messages in a thread rather than showing
whole threads that contain unread messages)

Or maybe leave all expanded but sort by Unread Messages - then all
threads containing unread messages will appear together at the top of
the list (or at the bottom, depending on settings). The fully read
threads need not bother you then as you would not have to scroll past
them..
