A PhD scholarship is currently available within the Department of Telematics Engineering at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunia (UPC). UPC is a public institution dedicated to research and higher education, specializing in the fields of engineering, science and architecture. With its 30,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students, UPC is one of the biggest technical universities in Spain. We are looking for a motivated researcher to join our promising research environment.
Description of Work: The PhD study will mainly be in line with an EU-funded international research project that targets the development of a portable femtocell system to be used to locate the mobiles in disaster scenarios. The study is expected to exploit the GSM and UMTS standards to develop, select and optimize the necessary procedures to trigger the mobiles to start signaling. Since a prototype system is targeted at the end of the project, the PhD candidate will have the advantage of being in touch with potential users of the system to obtain realistic requirements and feedback, as well as producing practical outcomes. Requirements and Eligibility Criteria: Applicants are expected to have knowledge on GSM and UMTS standards (at least in conceptual level), and preferably have experience in network-side programming of GSM (e.g. through OpenBTS) and/or the programming of software defined radio. Applicants are required to have a master-level degree in telecommunications engineering, computer engineering, or from a related discipline. A strong knowledge of programming skills and communication skills is essential for the project. A good level of written and spoken English is necessary due to the international nature of the project. Contract Details: The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Ilker Demirkol and Prof. Josep Paradells. The scholarship is for a period of 3 years. Starting date is flexible, however is expected to be before the end of 2012. The position will be based at the UPC Campus Nord, Barcelona, Spain. Application Procedure: Applications must be submitted to Dr. Ilker Demirkol with an email to [email protected]. Please make sure to include the reference [PhD-Application/GSM/2012] in the subject field of the email. The application should include: • A detailed curriculum vitae, including references with contact info and a list of publications (if applicable); • A copy of academic transcripts; and, • A cover letter highlighting your background and your skills required for this position. Closing Date: Primary consideration will be given to applications received before 15 October 2012, however the position will remain open until filled.
