[Our sincere apologies if your receive multiple copies of this message] We have two PhD positions immediately available at EURECOM, in South France, (https://www.eurecom.fr/en) covering the following topics:
- Vehicular Networking for Intelligent Transportation Systems - Traffic and Energy Optimizations in Small Cell Networks. More details about the two positions can be found below. Thrasyvoulos Spyropoulos Assistant Professor Mobile Communications Dept. Eurecom, Sophia-Antipolis, France http://www.eurecom.fr/~spyropou/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PhD Position in Small Cell Networks and Cloud RAN @ EURECOM, France --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Applications are invited by the Mobile Communications department at EURECOM, France, for a PhD position in the area of Small Cell Networks and Cloud RAN. This position is partially funded by the Intel Mobile Communications (IMC) Lab, and offers a competitive salary. The project deals with future mobile networks, with dense small-cell and heterogeneous cell deployments, connected to the core network over heterogeneous backhaul technologies. Such small-cell deployments will require a large amount of centralized processing inside the cloud (for interference coordination, radio resource control, and even baseband processing). So far, access and backhaul are individually designed and therefore not optimized. In order to support centralized processing and a heterogeneous backhaul, challenges on access and backhaul will be simultaneously tackled in this project. EURECOM is an elite French graduate school and research center conducting high quality research in the areas of Mobile Communication, Networking and Security, and Multimedia. It is situated in Sophia Antipolis (between Nice and Cannes), Europe's leading international science park.It is in close proximity with a large number of research units of leading multi-national corporations in the telecommunications, semiconductor and biotechnology sectors, as well as other outstanding research and teaching institutions. A freethinking, multinational population and the unique geographic location provide a quality of life without equal. More information about the school and department are available at https://www.eurecom.fr/en and http://www.eurecom.fr/cm/. ---Topic--- The focus of the position will be on (i) the design, modeling, and analysis of efficient power management algorithms for small cells: smaller cell size implies larger variance of each cell's utilization; at the same time, significant overlap will exist (e.g. between small and macro-cells); since power consumption of cells, when ON, is an important cost factor for cellular providers, managing the power states of small cells as a function of past, present, and future traffic requirements, as well as cross-coverage options, is expected to provide major energy cost improvements. (ii) joint access and backhaul resource allocation and delay analysis and optimization: since much of the processing will happen in the cloud, not only is it possible, but also necessary (due to the high bandwidth requirements, and heterogeneity of access and backhaul networks) to come up with joint medium access (with the medium being both wireless and backhaul resources), scheduling, and admission control; the selected candidate will explore efficient algorithms for these problems as well as analyze their performance using both modeling and simulations. In addition to the above research topics, which will be the main responsibilities of the student, the selected candidate is expected to have some involvement in project work package management, as well as occasional assistance in courses. The selected candidate will be co-supervised by Prof. Thrasyvoulos Spyropoulos and Prof. Navid Nikaein. ---Requirements--- We are looking for candidates who are self-motivated and would like to conduct high quality research, and publish in top venues. Candidates should have a Master's Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related area, preferably with a focus on networking or communications. They are also expected to have very good analytical skills (Probability Theory, Optimization) and some background in the area of wireless and cellular networking. Good programming skills and experience in popular simulation environments is a plus. A good level of written and spoken English is mandatory (knowledge of French is not required). Finally, the selected candidate will be well organized and able to integrate and work well in groups. The position duration is normally 3 years, with a maximum duration of 4 years. ---Application material--- The position is available immediately, and the selected candidate will be expected to join as soon as possible. The application evaluation and selection process will begin immediately, and will continue until the position is filled. Interested individuals should submit: - 1-2 page summary of research interests. - Detailed CV including publications. - Names and contact details of at least two referees, who are willing to provide detailed recommendation letters about the candidate - Transcript of courses taken at graduate (and optionally undergraduate) levels and their grades Send your application material via e-mail with the subject line ** Small Cell Networks PhD ** to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> ---Contact--- If you have questions or need more information about the position, we encourage you to visit our website or to contact Prof. Spyropoulos (http://www.eurecom.fr/~spyropou/) directly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PhD Position in Intelligent Transportation Systems @ EURECOM, France ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Applications are invited by the Mobile Communications department at EURECOM, France, for a PhD studentship in the area of Wireless Vehicular Networking for Intelligent Transportation Systems. This position is partially funded by the EU FP7 project COLOMBO, and offers a competitive salary. The project deals with self-organizing traffic management algorithms (i.e. smart traffic light systems) for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), based on gathered real-time traffic states from communicating vehicles and on-board PDAs. These advanced algorithms have as objectives to reduce traffic congestion, pollution or noise, and increase traffic safety. EURECOM is an elite French graduate school and research center conducting high quality research in the areas of Mobile Communication, Networking and Security, and Multimedia. It is situated in Sophia Antipolis (between Nice and Cannes), Europe's leading international science park. It is in close proximity with a large number of research units of leading multi-national corporations in the telecommunications, semiconductor and biotechnology sectors, as well as other outstanding research and teaching institutions. A freethinking, multinational population and the unique geographic location provide a quality of life without equal. More information about the school and department are available at https://www.eurecom.fr/en and http://www.eurecom.fr/cm/. ---Topic--- The focus of this position is on the collection, fusion and dissemination of traffic information using vehicular communication protocols, with the goal of providing a close-to-reality traffic state. A special case of interest considers low penetration rates, where V2X information will be augmented by partial information obtained from PDAs and smartphones. The proposed solutions will carefully consider optimal strategies for Road-side Units (RSU) infrastructure deployment, detection of traffic flows, inter-vehicle store-and-carry or store-carry-forward methodologies, environmental effects, and safety aspects. As a result, the selected candidate will have a chance to develop an expertise in diverse areas like vehicular traffic extrapolation, data fusion/gathering, cooperative data dissemination, infrastructure deployment, etc. An important component of the project and the position is the extensive evaluation of all proposed approaches using and extending state-of-the-art ITS simulators. EURECOM is an active developer of the ITS simulation platform iTETRIS (http://www.ict-itetris.eu/10-10-10-community/), used for both research and teaching. iTETRIS is a unique open source simulation platform characterized by a modular architecture that allows integrating two widely adopted traffic and wireless simulators, namely NS-3 and SUMO, while supporting the implementation of cooperative ITS applications. The candidate is expected to evaluate his or her research work on the iTETRIS platform and contribute to its maintenance and extensions. ---Requirements--- We are looking for candidates who are self-motivated and eager to conduct high quality research, publish in top venues, and pursue a doctoral degree.
