I am using Tcl/Tk 8.3. Note that my real life situation doesn't use multiple
pipes when it hangs -- just the initial one in the open command.

What version of Tcl are you using?
Their have been known bugs in the way Tcl closes pipes where it waits
on the children when it ought not to. Can you try this with Tcl 8.3 ?
