Of course, one headache is that unless an expression uses a significant number of scratch locations, the additional "free_reg()" won't change the code it generates, as registers don't get reused until the allocator's current register number wraps around, so problems might not show up except in sufficiently complex expressions. - This is the TCPDUMP workers list.
