Hello! > pcap-linux.c should probably use netlink rather than SIOGIFNETMASK if it > wants to be blessed by the Linux networking people.
No. If it wants to be blessed by everyone, pcap_lookupnet() must be deleted from libpcap api, it lost its sense together with escaping libcap from a lab where only sunos-4 and earlier was used. No it is a non-sense. And probably replaced with a function returning list of prefixes. > Search for SIOGIFNETMASK and for Wietse Venema, (who was in the right, but > flamed by multiple clueless people anyway). ... and you decided to resume the flame here? :-) Clueless person is apparently me. > Linux gratuitously breaks the > SIOCGIFNETMASK APIs Lie. It does not. But it really allows to do weird things with address configuration which do not map into any SIOC*s. People do some shit using tools with status sort of "dd of=/dev/kmem" (sadly, written by me) ignoring exposed alerts in manual and after this expect that everything will work.
