        i was thinking about something like this:

#define __ATTRIBUTE_PACKED__    __attribute__((packed))
#else
#define __ATTRIBUTE_PACKED__
#endif

        u_int32_t bar;
        u_int32_t baz;
} __ATTRIBUTE_PACKED__;
