I find these recent postings a bit distressing. It has also been my experience at MSS (though I did not go last year due to another obligation) of having difficulty with a teaching paper session "making." This sounds like an important topic of conversation and sociological analysis! Is this really the case (that is, is this happening more or less than in the past? only at MSS?). Why? Is it because there are many more teaching sessions but not many more people involved on scholarly teaching and SoTL? How do campus reward structures fit in this? Is it related to lower attendance due to tight travel funds? Have we raised the assumed level of expectation about what can be submitted (SoTL not just teaching tips, for example) so fewer people have something or think they should submit? Could it be people are attending and presenting such work at new cross discipline conferences (IS-SoTL, Carnegie SoTL Colloquium) instead of at disciplinary meetings??? And...??? Finally, what should/can we do about this?
Call for ASA 2006 (Montreal) papers will be out soon. I have a SoTL session... I hope people will also consider submitting to that one.
