Rick Tewksbury at Louisville has a series of pieces on both ethnography of the nature Angus writes about (porn stores, etc.), but also wrote one piece about how a gay bath was organized to direct behavior in certain ways (and how you needed to know all of the codes, as I recall, to know when to knock on a door, when to stay away because things are going on inside, etc.).  Again, they are old.  Write to Rick at the CJ dept, or check an index.
