Hi, Peter.  It isn't more current--in fact, it's less so, but that doesn't make it less important--but I would recommend looking at Everett Hughes's work and Howard Becker's Art Worlds.  Obviously, dealing drugs isn't likely to be seen as art by many, but Becker's argument will help.  For Becker, everything is work:  Deviance has a career (or careers), and art gets made in professional networks.  Clint Sanders has a great article on tattooing as a profession in Aronold Rubin's collection Marks of Civilization (UCLA).  I also have an article on the professionalization of tattooing and changing standards in apprenticeship ("Slinging ink or scratching skin?" in Lopata and Henson's Unusual Occupations collection (JAI)).  Finally, Philipe Bourgeois's In Search of Respect:  Selling Crack in El Barrio should probably be in your reading list.
