You might also consider Juliet Schor's work on the commodification of 
childhood.  In my Family class, I have used her 2003 article “The 
Commodification of Childhood: Tales from the Advertising Front Lines” 
(Hedgehog Review 5 (Summer): 7 – 24.), based on her book _Born to Buy_.
She specifically discusses the strategies used by corporations to market 
directly to children.
