I'm teaching Family at a community college and I'm using the following books:
Graff What is Marriage for? A historical/social analysis looking at the functions of marriage from the perspective of legitimating same sex unions.
Hochschild The Time Bind nice analysis of work and family and the creation of the "third shift"
Lareau Unequal Childhoods Amazing analysis of race, class and parenting. A bit difficult for CC level, but worth it.
Wallerstein and Blakeslee The Good Marriage Something a little moire positive to end the semester with.
I've also used Koontz (The Way We Are) and Coltrane (Family Man) in the past but they are getting a little dated and so student buy-in is decreased.
Be Well,

Greetings fellow travelers,I'm teaching a sociology of families course in the fall, and am looking for
an engaging monograph. I really would like for it to be written by a
sociologist (rather than a journalist). The class is for lower-division
students. Any brilliant suggestions?(I'm toying with the idea of incorporating a full-length book - I will also
continue to use various other articles and excerpts....)Thanks for the help!
