An article in TS years ago used six distinct circles to show how race is
socially constructed. Students have to place the circles in categories (racial
grouping) and usually there is very little agreement on how that is
accomplished, showing that assumptions are made on visual appearance about
people's racial characteristics and thus socially constructed. Sorry, I don't
have the citation for this, just the circles.

hi, Chris

don't forget to do a search in Teaching Soc as there are several
different examples of similar ideas. i have found some great techniques
in that journal.

something i show after doing a similar exercise is a short DVD from the
National Genographic project. it is quite compelling as it demonstrates
how through DNA evidence that we are all descended from a group of
people that left Africa about 60,000 years ago. this takes many students
by surprise and really messes up the whole notion of "race."
