As Deputy Editor of Teaching Sociology I am in charge of finding reviewers for books and videos submitted for review in the journal.

I have had a bit of run on videos of late and am having trouble finding willing reviewers.  I am looking for reviewers who are willing to (1) view a DVD and determine whether it merits a TS review because it may useful in a sociology course.  (2) Then, assuming the DVD could be useful to sociology teachers, to write a review for TS.

I need reviewers for the following DVD documentaries:

(1) Fallon, NY: Deadly Oasis (Amie Williams, Director) – story of a town where an unusually high number of children have been diagnosed with leukemia.  Perhaps appropriate for medical sociologists.

(2)  No Sweat (Amie Williams, Director) – an investigation of the Los Angeles garment district and t-shirt manufacturing workers.  Perhaps appropriate for sociology of work or race/ethnicity/immigration.

Each of these first two are described in greater detail at:  www.balmaidenfilms.com

(3) Curtain Call (Chuck Braverman, Director) – documentary featuring residents of the Actors’ Retirement Fund Home recalling their work on Broadway and their lives.  Perhaps appropriate for aging, gerontology or life course sociologists.  www.CurtainCallDVD.com

(4) To You Sweetheart, Aloha.  (S. Leo Chiang & Mercedes Coats, directors) - documentary featuring widowed 94 year old musician and his 26 year old female manager.  Perhaps appropriate for aging, gerontology or life course sociologists.    www.SweetheartAloha.com

(5) The Tailenders (Adele Horne, Director) – group of evangelical missionaries aim to make audio recordings of Bible stories in every language on earth.  They distribute recordings along with hand-wind players especially to impoverished and displaced peoples called “The Tailenders” because they are the last to be reached by global evangelism.  Perhaps appropriate for sociologists of religion or social change.  www.adelehorne.net

If you are interested in reviewing any of these DVDs, send me an email off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED]  Please attach your CV.  I will send the DVDs to the selected reviewers who have 2 months to complete the review.

I am always interested in locating additional book reviewers as well.  So if you’re interested in doing book reviews, let me know.  I have received several books on women & work, crime/criminal justice, gender, Asian Americans, and service learning recently.  So I am looking for reviewers in those areas.

Thanks considering it!

Jay
