An excellent, albeit somewhat dated resource is Davis and Smith's book
The NORC General Social Survey:  A User's Guide (Sage, 1992).  You also
will find considerable information about the GSS in chapters 8 and 9 of
Singleton and Straits' Approaches to Social Research (Oxford Univ.
Press, 2005).  These chapters report many of the survey methods and
materials used in conducting the GSS.
