I realize that you say, "generally true," but i think it has to do with factors other than just how large groups of people are organized. Durkheim never really accounted for accumulation of resources all that well.
 
a current irony in the "war on terror" is that it appears to be mechanical thinking ("we will just kill them all") in an organic world ("how can you kill kids who have never been born yet?"). i realize that this irony is lost on many.
